Indications
Diazoxide is indicated for the treatment of hypoglycaemia in patients with hyperinsulinaemia frolicking:
- in adults with inoperable extrapancreatic tumours or tumours of pancreatic cells (both malignant and benign) that carry out insulin synthesis;
- in children aged 0 to 18 years with:
- leucine-sensitive pancreatic cell hyperplasia (a condition in which an amino acid called leucine stimulates insulin production due to an inherited defect);
- nesidioblastosis (neonatal hypoglycaemic syndrome caused by total transformation of the punctate epithelium of pancreatic islet cells);
- extrapancreatic localisation of insulin-producing cells;
- tumour of pancreatic islet cells.
Diazoxide may be used in the preoperative period as a temporary measure and in the postoperative period, if hypoglycaemia persists.
Contraindications
Do not take Diazoxide if you are:
- allergic to diazoxide, other thiazides or any components of the drug listed in item 6 of the leaflet;
- acute cerebral circulation disorder;
- acute stage of myocardial infarction;
- pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding your child;
- functional hypoglycaemia (e.g. low blood sugar due to poor diet).
Usage
Recommended dose
The dose of Diazoxide will be determined by your doctor according to your condition, it depends on your blood glucose level and your reaction to this medicine.
The recommended daily dose is 3-8 mg/kg divided into 2-3 doses (every 8-12 hours). The usual starting dose is 3 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses (every 8 hours). The recommended starting dose is 200 mg.
Your doctor will monitor your condition during treatment with Diazoxide.
Use in children
Children aged from 0 to 7 years: the recommended daily dose is 8-15 mg/kg divided into 2-3 doses (every 8-12 hours). The recommended starting dose is 10 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses (every 8 hours).
Children aged 8 to 18 years: the recommended daily dose is 3-8 mg/kg divided into 2-3 doses (every 8-12 hours). The usual starting dose is 3 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses (every 8 hours). The recommended starting dose is 200 mg.
Route and/or route of administration
Intravenously, if possible - after a meal, with a small amount of liquid.
