Indications
Pirfenidone is indicated for use in adults (over 18 years of age) to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
If there is no improvement or if you feel worse, you should see your doctor.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to pirfenidone; concomitant use of fluvoxamine (see Interactions); severe renal impairment (Cl creatinine <30 ml/min); end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis; severe hepatic dysfunction; end-stage liver disease; smoking; concomitant use of strong inducers of CYP1A2 isoenzyme; pregnancy; breast-feeding.
Usage
Always take the drug in full compliance with the recommendations of your doctor. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor.
Treatment with Pirfenidone should be initiated and supervised by a specialist physician experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of IPF.
The recommended daily dose is 3 capsules (801 mg) 3 times a day (2403 mg/day).
Your drug is usually prescribed in increasing doses according to the following regimen:
- for the first 7 days: 1 capsule (267 mg) 3 times a day (801 mg/day);
- from day 8 to 14: 2 capsules (534 mg) 3 times a day (1602 mg/day);
- from day 15 onwards: 3 capsules (801 mg) 3 times a day (2403 mg/day).
Your doctor may reduce your dose if you experience side effects such as GI problems, any skin reactions to sunlight, or significant changes in liver enzyme activity.
